Tell me what you want, what you really really want……. (please, no zigs or ahs)

CommentLuv has been doing really well since I launched the 2.0 version and updated the support site.

It got used by John Cow for a while which caused a flood of registrations and even influenced a few more bloggers to give it a try. John has since stopped using it in favour of his own CommentMilk (ever the original marketer) which adds all sorts of fields to his comment form for things like keyphrase, twitter url etc all of which can be integrated into CommentLuv by adding a page to the support site and no need to worry about when WP2.7 uses a new comment form format for (say that 3 times fast!) when they integrate IntenseDiscussion.

Suffice to say I’m not worried about the cow competition with authority blogs like Caroline-Middlebrook and HowToSpoter.com using CommentLuv to great effect as well as the literally thousands of fine blogs installing it every week and the millions of hits to the remote script each month prove it has quite a wide reach. Even more so when Typepad CommentLuv goes into production!

The CommentLuv.com site is approaching 1000 registered and confirmed users after just 4 weeks of operation with over 150,000 calls each day to the remote script from the thousands and thousands of blogs using CommentLuv. The heart info box introduction has been responsible for doubling the amount of registrations each day and more than a thousand unique users each day hovering their mouse over the heart to see what else the comment author has been up to and what they look like.

All these new users have put the plugin through absolutely every conceivable permutation of options and theme integration and as a result, version 2.5.4 is the most powerful yet and working on more blog hosting types than ever.

Now the plugin is ’sorted’ to my satisfaction I can start to work on the ‘back end’ features like the support site and info box as well as extended member features like adding to the list of your last 10 posts with an option to display your twitter url or use a keyphrase…

This is what I need your help with, do you need these things? do you even want them?

CommentLuv has evolved from a simple plugin I created just for myself to a fully fledged site and community plugin about to be released on typepad, blogger and more because of one reason,
YOU wanted it! it’s all your fault for sending me comments saying thinks like, “thanks!” or “this is great!” so now you need to tell me what more you want… I’m perfectly willing to give it, but first some questions I have..

  1. Would allowing your users to show their chosen keyphrase instead of their last blog post be helpful to you?
  2. Would you want to show your twitter url instead of one of your last blog posts?
  3. Do you think it would decrease the value of CommentLuv if it showed more than just last blog posts?
  4. Would you rather just have extra information like Twitter, facespace, mybook etc in a profile page at CommentLuv.com and have the button on your own blog link to it?

I have my own answers to these and they are no,no,YES and YES..

But, I think these answers are important to find out from YOU the user, it’s your blog that CommentLuv gets installed on and it’s your comments that get the link added. Let me know what you want or don’t want with CommentLuv and I’ll zig-e-zig ah it! :-D

i’m actually pretty happy with commentluv the way it is. then again, i’ve only ever experienced it from the side of a commenter, and not as a publisher (my blog’s on blogger). :)

kouji: that’s the kind of feedback that I want thanks! there are more people using it as a commenter than as a blog owner so it’s important to keep the visitors happy. that’s what the plugin was designed for. bloggers luv to keep blogettes happy :-)

Also? Some of my commenters do not show a last blog post. Is it because they don’t have a feed link in their header?

This is easily one of the most popular plug-ins I have seen created. You would have thought someone else would’ve thought about this and created it themselves way way before you ever did. I guess you are the smart ones though and created it first. Congratulations on your success with this WordPress plugin.

Andy, It’s pretty much perfect the way it is. :)
My only suggestion would be implementing a version of “Keywordluv” into the CommentLuv. does that make sense ?

witchypoo: I think so too thanks. I’ll investigate your mysterious missing last blog posts just as soon as scooby comes home :-)

franklin: they say the best inventions are the ones people can’t believe weren’t thought of before. thanks for your kind words

ASPR: this is something I tried in an experiment and it was quite easily done and it didn’t break the names when it was deactivated like keyword luv does. (if you deactivate it all names get a mailto: attached to them because of the @ symbol)

but, I’m not sure it would make it better.

The majority of blogs I see that have keywordluv on it get lots of comments but, from business bloggers or make money blogs and that’s not what I see on commentluv blogs.

Commentluv seems to be installed on more ‘real’ bloggers that have a, and contribute to, a community.

I don’t want to turn the comments into another advertising opportunity, the last blog posts bit still keeps its integrity as a community builder as long as there aren’t buy stock market bonds or finance your home links everywhere.

    but I’m open to opinion!

I am fairly happy with it as it is right now an just could not think of anything to add at the moment.

Anyway, the only thing that I wonder is that it seems to be having minor glitches with some templates or themes out there. For example I can turn on the border because it would mess up my comment boxes and the little red heart did not appear on any of the comment on mine. However, I am sure that this is a template related issue and would not worry too much about it.

    Cheers!

I love comment luv the way it is now.

I think having a selectable saying instead of Users Last Blog Post is… would be cool. I just don’t want to see the plugin get so complex that people are annoyed by it.

What I mean is if users have to many options to choose from it might eventually deter them from commenting. Because it could take to long to leave a simple comment.

I have only used Comment Luv from the commenters side, had not set up a blog yet. I have to say that it is great. I have to admit that recently I’ve been keeping an eye out and commenting more regularly on sites that have Comment Luv. It is just nice to know that you are getting a little bit back for your participation in a conversation. Keep up the great work.

I think this is the best plug in out there for wordpress. It’s such a great way to give back to those who have left comments.

Is there a way to disable where we have left comments. When I hoover over the heart, it says this link has also appeared on these blogs… I don’t want any body following my comments around too easy, let them hunt for them instead. :)

Otherwise, no complaints, thank you for a great plugin and a job well done.

    Hi Andy

Great to see all the progress you’re making with CommentLuv, rock on!

As someone, like kouji, who’s just using it from the commenter side, I think it’s already excellent. I guess the only problem is for commenters who don’t have blogs? Maybe you could give them the option to add a link to one of their social profiles instead?

    Rahul: thanks

    Steve: me too!

Jon: I think I can do something with extended user profile fields so users can add that info and have it displayed instead but I want to be careful not to change the concept of commentluv and that’s bloggers rewarding other bloggers, not sure if non-bloggers would use it. if they were social, they’d have a blog already!

jon: I think I might get around to adding social profile fields to the profile form, the top20 list now shows gravatars and description so it might be a good place to put twitter et al links there too

Pandu: please update to the latest version of commentluv, it should solve your problem

joan: please point me to the number of posts that say they get more spam after installing it, I never see any on my google alerts! I might be able to help.

personally, I haven’t found it to increase spam as most spam comes from auto bots and this version of commentluv works via javascript which isn’t seen by bots

    1. Would allowing your users to show their chosen keyphrase instead of their last blog post be helpful to you?
Yes as an option to turn on or off

    2. Would you want to show your twitter url instead of one of your last blog posts?
Yes, again turn on or off

    3. Do you think it would decrease the value of CommentLuv if it showed more than just last blog posts?
Yes, but again maybe an on/off option. Or a set # of posts to allow

    4. Would you rather just have extra information like Twitter, facespace, mybook etc in a profile page at CommentLuv.com and have the button on your own blog link to it?
Social media is the bomb Andy, folks are always looking for ways to share via Social Media. Optional again. You could still implement this as an additional bonus for registering on CommentLuv.com

Thank you for your work! And p.s *looks around slyly* You sure are a hotty! I’m married, but not dead yet *wink*

Hey Andy. No I haven’t dropped off the face of the earth. Still following along with CL. My Powerbook has been out of commission for over a week, but the replacement part should be here in a couple days.

I like the Twitter idea. Having the option to show the latest tweet and that tweet being a link to your profile could be a good idea. Just be careful with feature bloat, as you said.
