oh batshit, it’s happened again. thrice

What a load of bollox! This seems to be the week I experience maximum crashage.

Hard times/drive

First, my shop pc had a hard drive crash. A massive one. The drive wouldn’t even spin! I tried the usual methods found on a Google like putting it in a plastic bag and putting it the freezer which is supposed to fix a jammed disc.

nope.

Then I tried what this page tried. Basically, swapping the logic board from an identical drive to the faulty one. That actually got the drive spinning and recognized in windows but unfortunately, it was completely trashed. Every sector screwed and no matter what software apps I threw at it, it wouldn’t play. (so I took it apart to see how it works)

Lost code

All my backups of my server where on that disc. All.of.them!

In a great wave of relief, I found that 99% of it had been updated to the live server only the day before. The 1% that didn’t just so happened to be my awesome edit of the pay-to-blog plugin which I was about to put on ComLuv. dammit, that was some good coding I added to the plugin.

It would have allowed me to set a free time limit on new blogs of say 30 days and when that runs out, the next time the blog owner tried to log on, they would be presented with a page where they can pay a piddly 5 USD to have the blog enabled for a year. If they didn’t want to or couldn’t pay then they could request a free blog and that would notify me by email and list the request on my admin page.

I’ll have to rewrite the code and I bet I can’t remember how I did it!

New install, new problems

I managed to grab another hard drive and put it in the box to replace the poop one. Installed Ubuntu 9.10 and vwmare and got all the shop POS software working with the ancient equipment we have. Sweet! until… only 24 hours of nice working, it went pooooop. Something to do with i810 video drivers missing. Cue 5 hours pissing about with sudo apt-get and other linux bollox until at last, it is working again.

And then Vmware decided to stop working with the serial port via USB. Pleh!

More sudo apt-get and 2 hours later, I found an old vwmare image for the win98 system and copied over the contents of the .vmx file and ta-da! it worked again.

No more please!

No more. thanks. done it now.

New Wheels

At least the new wheels look good on Twitpic

Even these got delayed by 3 days. Next day delivery bleeeeuuurrgh!

Crashing like a mofo and OMG big list of to-do

August
12

It’s been almost a week where I haven’t been coding anything for longer than an hour without the computer crashing with weird little squares all over the screen. :-(

pc_crash11

I think it has to do with my integrated graphics card (Radeon HD 3300) . I have gone through all the usual steps of updating drivers, bios, firmware and wotnot and I am waiting for the next crash.

It’s been hard because I need to code some major things for the ComLuv site and every time I get deep into it, the bloody pc crashes! It’s doubly hard because I have so many great things to watch and listen to on these awesome monitors and 5.1 speakers and I can’t because a little bit of media is liable to make the screen freeze with little squares corrupting it.

Big mofo list

I’ve got a fair bit of stuff to do for the ComLuv network, it’s kind of like the washing up. The longer you leave it, the less likely you are to do it… imagine a big pile of washing up and then imagine that the kitchen crashes every time you run the water. That’s me that is. boo hoo

If my latest open heart procedures on my hardware can keep the system up without pissing it’s pants when an mp3 gets played, I can move on to what I was doing before all this crashing malarky. Which is..

1st priority: Get the url registration page working with a new look and form validation. (seriously, I don’t know how people keep putting http://http:// in their url field!)

2nd priority: Update the WP commentluv plugin with these new things:

  • update the settings page to look real nice
I’m doing this with a plugin framework that takes care of all the settings page bumph so I can easily make it a lot more intuitive to use.
  • Allow CSS to be edited for all objects
This seems to be an important thing to do. Rather than edit a style sheet or hunt through the code for inline styles, I will add a text input box for the different objects so (advanced) users can completely control the look of the links, badge and info box.
  • Add the Russian and Chinese language files
Awesome work from users to add even more languages to the plugin

3rd Priority: Allow more URL’s per account on ComLuv.
This was supposed to be done already but I have spent an awful lot of time on making sure the basics work properly, plus, my personal/business life has it’s own mofo lists to deal with!

4th Priority: Add a “what I’m doing” theme to ComLuv so extra features that are only available to ComLuv blog owners can be opened to all. This will be a friend feed type of affair where you can add widgets to show your stumbleupons, diggs, comments, luvlinks, link clicks etc etc.

I want this in right now but time to do it is a rarity for me these days! Having this theme will allow people who don’t necessarily want a new blog to have the extra features. It might help with links and traffic to have a site where your latest links and other social activities are chronicled and it’ll reduce the amount of empty blogs created on the network.

5th Priority: Tutorials and videos!
Lots of them.

6th Priority: Email courses.
Everything from starting blogging to running your own network to making money with a ComLuv blog (I’m itching to start this one!)

There’s loads more but it’s depressing the hell out of me listing them!

As soon as the crashing like a mofo finishes, I’ll try to get on the coding like a mofo. Stay tuned!

My digital vs analogue life: analogue is winning (for now)

January
4

Even though I have been on the internet daily and done plenty of geeky digital things over the past month, my blog hasn’t had a new post to display for a while and it feels like I haven’t done anything at all!

For me, less blog activity = more busy life so when things need my full attention, it’s my blog that is the first to suffer. There was a a time when I would postpone real life events because I had a regular post spot to write or I’d get itchy feet to get home when I was out and knew I had lots of comments to respond to.

The past few months however, has given Life the opportunity to show me that the word “important” has a fluid meaning. Things that were, are no longer and things that weren’t are suddenly more important than anything else …until they’re no longer important any more and I can get back ‘on track’.

Right now, there are some pretty big important things to get done. It may involve moving, it may involve a massive change of career and more but for sure, IT’S VERY IMPORTANT I GET THEM DONE!!

but enough of my moaning about stuff that can’t be changed…running parallel to all these important things is something else that has consumed my days and nights over the past year, the Commentluv site and plugin.

Now, this would normally have been one of those “it’s important, oh wait, now this is more important” times but I took all the pressure off by going to a professional team. I said “I want this” and they said “that’ll be xxx.xx $ please” so I said “yes!” and now all the pressure is off me because I have paid a deposit on a completely new site which will be running on a new platform and have so many wanted and useful features that you’ll be blown away!!
The backend script for CommentLuv is also being rewritten with a view to providing much more functionality and also allow for a much better stats system.

The work is due to start in February and in the mean time I will be looking for people to take on staff positions. There will be a variety of positions available as the time comes to launch the site so stay tuned to the newsletter (due to start again soon) and this site for how to apply.

I’m already arranging the first paid writer and hope to get a lot more in the coming year which had the effect of taking a huge amount of pressure off my shoulders while I sort out the things with people who don’t understand what blogs are (you know, the real life people out there in real life). I’m still around and I’m still coding when I can, the rest of my digital life will return to normal when my analogue life finds it’s feet!

Drowning in code – why WP2.7 will be a journey for me

November
16

Someone sent me a message saying that the options page doesn’t update on CommentLuv for WP2.7b3 and it’s set off a small chain reaction in my head.

I checked another plugin that does work for the options update in 2.7b3 and compared it to my code and that’s where the kerbumph happened in my head…

My wordpress plugin code needs a complete overhaul! you see, it has grown organically (as in like wild weed beds) since it’s inception as a simple one file plugin to what it is now which is a large bit of code with functions calling functions and some (I admit) messy solutions to problems.

Not my fault though! These messy solutions were made at a time when my coding knowledge was expanding (which is always). My coding knowledge is pretty much down to writing this plugin and it’s support site so it’s only natural that code I wrote just 2 months ago could have benefited from my brain of now.

Not a problem… this just means I need to rewrite the whole plugin and add some things I have wanted to do for a long time but I didn’t know how!

Here’s a list of things I have in my mind for it (more for my own sake when I come back and stare at old posts for inspiration)..

  • Move the options page to a separate file
This will make it easier to update options and be compatible with 2.7
  • Fix so no config for form fields required (done)
This came to me while thinking about eggs. go figure!
  • Use external javascript file for CommentLuv and heart box
I wanted to do this a long time ago but didn’t know if my server could handle it, turns out it can and it has the advantage of me being able to change the way commentluv functions at one place and everyone that uses it gets the update immediately. no more relying on people to update their plugin!
  • put a refresh image next to the last blog post so someone can refresh their link
This is so I can simplify the code of the javascript for speedier running and compatibility
  • add alert function so remote script can send back an alert to the user if they’re commenting too fast
  • make all platform versions look the same (blogger done)
  • retrieve commentluv member id from options page via ajax
  • automatically detect if blog is using ID commenting and take appropriate action so commentluv still works

There’s a lot more I imagine but the most important thing for me is the options page and remote javascript instead of included.

The house will be busy this week and the contest is going mad so when all that’s over, I’ll see if I can go to a quiet place and be out of contact for a week while I make the changes. oh gwd, I see a large growth of chin whiskers happening…

New affiliate pages constructed

August
30

I just spent a few hours putting some affiliate program descriptions on to the blog under the page “affiliate programs”. They are all things that I use myself and would reccommend to anyone who is after a home based business.

The style for this theme is great and lets me create pages like this extremely quickly, this theme really is easy to use and update. I particularly like how you can use the same page template but with different content and sidebars so you can get exactly what you’re after.

I’ve also added snazzy date css bits to the posts which turned out to be easier than I thought because of the fine instructions at css-tricks.com

You can see instructions on how to create your own CSS date boxes here

New theme coming soon with added sexy bits

August
19

I finally got around to having a day in front of the pc to do my new theme, I’ve been fiddling and playing about with the template code for ages and it’s really starting to come together!

I’ve even written a few custom plugins for it..

A latest picture from flickr relating to the title of a post on the front page

new lotto results with added links!!!

a custom script include in the header per post (using custom fields)

updated commentluv again

I am pretty sure I’ll get some sort of working theme up by the weekend if I get some more time, the biggest hurdles are done though. The rest is just prettying up.

Hope to see you soon!!

Sneeze
Source
I caught a cold last week and it’s just moved on to the coughy coughy stage which is killing me! I’ve got to work all through this phlegm (great word!) and try and portray a happy go lucky person who just so happens to sound like a stoned Darth Vader :-)

No matter though because I notice I have gone sub 90k on my Alexa rank, Technorati authority is up near 300 and there have been quite a few click-thru’s on my uVme ads so, not too bad considering…

Because of my extended man-cold (an extreme version of flu that only the male of the species gets), I haven’t been up to making any decent posts, even my drafts that I usually keep for such occasions have dried up (plenty of titles, no content though). It’s a shame because I have some super ideas for posts and for the life of me I cannae be bovvered at all, luckily I don’t charge an entrance fee for this blog because I’d have to start issuing refunds!

I’ll get some quality stuff up soon like how to make a countdown button with php (see the 125×125 button at the top), create some AJAX Stumblebait, update CommentLuv to use AJAX and generally lark about with words and stuff….

now where’s the Lemsip?….

FiddyP Updates coming your way…

November
27

updating
I’ve made an update to the CommentLuv plugin so it behaves better, the speed should be better too after rearranging the different parsing routines and I’ve added a bit of code submitted by Edward De Leau of http://edward.de.leau.net/ to handle web-log.nl blogs. Thanks Edward!

The second part of the AJAX series is coming soon, I’ve been literally worked off my feet this week so I’ll have to squeeze some typing in during the evenings this week to get it finished.

I’ve added some adsense code here and there to see if it has any potential, I’ll see how they perform before deciding if I want to keep them. Lots of impressions so far but no clicks and I’ve also added a couple Tradedoubler ads. One at the top for PC World and one to the right on the main page for special offers. A few clicks but no sales yet but it’s still very early to decided if they will be worth it or not.

I’m also trialling the Google search box instead of the Wordpress one, it can search the web and this site and display the results within the FiddyP template which is pretty cool. I’ll test it for a few weeks to see how that goes too.

AntiBarbie has prepared a holiday themed short story for here and it’s great! Look out for it on the 1st of December, she’s a dark writer that one. You’ll see why when you read it.
