It always amazes me how much time and effort that people will put in to SEO tricks and tactics, how they swear that they know Google will ‘see’ this or ‘know’ that based on some rumour of a overheard bit of gossip written by a black hat SEO guru. Lol, what is a SEO guru anyway?
It’s an emperors new clothes designer that’s what! If someone tells you that they know what the Google algorithm wants then they are feeding you a line of BS because no one knows and if they did, Google would change it so it would be old news very quickly.

Is all SEO hopeless or even real?
Of course not! there are things that you can do that are known as ‘best practices’ or more commonly known as, ‘common sense’ and you can find out about them from Google itself from their webmaster pages and blog.
A good friend of mine who has successfully got his clients to the number one position on Google for their chosen terms recently wrote an interesting article on SEO and is it real?. He spends his life on and around Google search and even he says that you can try too hard.
The human factor
I recently had emails go to and fro with a colleague and she was quoting another SEO guy who said to bold this term and only do it once and how that is how the Google algorithm ‘knows’ what the article is about.
That makes me lol! Google algorithm ‘knows’ nothing! it can’t ‘see’ anything either, it can only trawl text and html source. It doesn’t look at images, it only stores what they’re name is and whether or not it has a caption and what that caption is.
Here’s a little experiment I want to try to prove that last paragraph..

I just searched for your phrase and no results in the big G yet. Granted it has been three days. I agree with you to a point but, its a dangerous position to be in when you think you are smarter than everyone else out there and can call BS on SEO. I’ve seen it work and I’ve seen it fail…but you are right in that a lot of it is common sense. And of course, if most people lack common sense as most people do..then you can charge a lot for such services and be legit.

Well, maybe google image isn’t so easy to manipulate, I did something like this before and it worked a treat. Maybe google doesnt index this site as often as it used to!
I agree with you, there are some that do know what SEO is and how to apply it and they can charge big money for it because they can get results without using black hat tactics which google can spot a mile away. I am not pooing on all SEO, just the amateurs that seem to be out there in the millions who think automated comment bots and blog scrapers are all that’s needed.
thanks for coming by and leaving your comments
it should be very difficult to prove anything from google, as you said, the algorithm is not open.
even if you prove this in the site it is right, we also can not say that this can suit all sites.right?
I couldn’t agree with you more! Tricks may get your site ranked for a little while but google will find out and drop you.
Just stick to good content on your site and careful link building and you will be rewarded.

Nothing beats great content and a carefully crafted SEO campaign! Those shortcuts and false claims are causing more harm than good to legit business owners.
Funny how the Adsense on the screen now shows a link to a provider of a xrumer service

I’ve heard it said many times: the best SEO is good, well-marked up content – just following the basics set out in Google’s Webmaster Tools and writing about your niche regularly. Thanks for the post!

You are 100% right. The reality is SEO is like trying to find a light switch in the dark. Run your hand along the wall and eventually you will find the light switch and the lights come on. Or you just keep running your hand along that wall and never find the light switch. It is a shot in the dark basically.

I hate the word “guru,” first off. And personally, I think more SEOs should be looking to give Google and the other search engines what they want… rather than trying to manipulate them.
Search engines want to present the best quality and most relevant results. So make original, high quality content on your site a priority, then focus on reinforcing that with link baits and so on.

There’s a definite reason why Google keeps everything a secret, and that’s because they want to keep everyone honest. Just keep going with wht you know works and you can’t go wrong.

I agree on writing good content and exercising a lot of common sense. There’s just too many SEO tricks out there and you’ll never know what works and what doesn’t. I even bought some only to read a disclaimer that it’s not 100% guaranteed to work. Sheesh!

Taking “guru” advice can lead to a lot of painful work, so I’m tempted to throw in with you. But I still gotta deal with G and she’s a fickle lady. She likes backlinks and she likes variety – whether that’s an emulation of human behavior reduced to an algorithm or not, I can’t really say. I just need a pattern that gets my relevant sites into the search rankings. But you’ve got to start somewhere…you can write killer content and if no one sees it all you’ve got is killer content!
Just checking in… it’s August now and no scary dog with a smile on first page of the big G yet. Interesting article though.

I definitely agree with you. Some people do wayyyyyy too much thinking when they’re trying to do SEO. They should think more the way that Google (or Google employees) are thinking. Like you said, they’re trying to stay on top of the industry and not let online marketers take advantage of them.

Well, as I said awhile ago. It is really important to have a good keywords so that the Google algorithm will see the quality of the text.

It’s really refreshing to read that just doing the common sense basics is OK! I’m never one to go into great SEO detail…I’ll often even be lazy with the basics.
But so many people are saying this HAS to be done and that HAS to be done, that I sometimes think I’m missing out and really should jump on board and try and keep up with all the latest SEO trips and tricks…
then I’ll read something like this and just not worry about it!!
Thanks!!!

I think it is pretty clear from the changes in G since May that they are far from perfect. I still cannot find half of the medical research I just took for granted prior to May 1 and simple searches for a lot of stuff now return pages of junk. I think they should focus on that first, worry about content second.
This SEO thing is getting more and more complex by the day. The fight for PR is getting tougher by the day.
i wish other search engines could also boost thier engines, so we dont have to go thru all this trouble because of the big G
Nowadays, Content is king, Link is queen
They are of major importance in SEO field.

Good stuff Andy
Its a good idea to keep it simple and look after your human visitors first. See how you get on with SEO that way before getting more technical if you need to. Search engines try to look after the interests of their human visitors, so it makes sense to do the same.
Often, by promoting your site as if search engines didnt exist, you end up doing the things that will help most for SEO – submitting to relevant directories, relationship building etc
