How much are you willing to pay for free software?

I made an announcement via CommentLuv.com to the ~1200 subscribers using email and I got a great response from quite a few people within minutes of sending it except, one person said they didn’t want to receive any communication at all from me.

Now, I’m not a spammer and I firmly believe in only letting people know about important news and changes no more than once a week so it’s a little disconcerting to receive a stfu email (even though it was from less than a tenth of 1% of those who received the same email)

I tried to be polite in my response and pointed the person to the checkboxes that could be unticked to stop receiving email but to be honest, those check boxes were right there to be seen when they registered and similar to many support requests, it was easier for the person to type up an email requesting the answer than it was to RTFM so I felt like saying something else entirely! politeness won through though (thanks mum)

Now, ever the conscientious coder I don’t want to cause a problem with even 1 commentluvver so I need to ask you something..

if you’re using some software for free and benefit from it and like to use it, expect updates to fix bugs , someone on the end of an email when something goes wrong or want a speedy response on the forum, is it too much to ask for me to be able to let you know by email when those bug fixes and updates happen?

  4. I always appreciate your updates, etc. Has the contest started yet? Because I need to do a post when it does.

  5. Jerks are all over the internet mate. I don’t really mind your updates to be honest and if for some reason I don’t want to read the email I just don’t read it. If it comes to a point where it annoys me I will simply unsubscribe, that’s as simple as that. But don’t worry, I can stand update emails ;)

  6. nice to know Witchypoo! the contest isn’t live yet, the registration page is still hidden (unless you put contest in the url)

I need to collect some stats on those who registered for a few days so I can fine tune the choosing mechanism

Ben: thanks a lot for letting me know, I suppose it’s just like TV. You can get a million people watch the show and if only 10 complain, it is taken off the air

well, you can take my programmes but you’ll never take my commentluv!!

  7. I ran a forum for a while and emailed all the members about numerous new features… you should have seen some of the emails I got complaining! It blew my mind!

  8. I’m with betsy 1000% on this one. Especially something you KNOW will be updated often…at the very least, as often as WP updates.

Makes ya wonder sometimes… think they get pissy at WP for “invading” the dashboard with all those pesky updates? :-)

Imagine if WP was to send emails, LMAO!

  10. You are perfectly justified in asking for such feed back. Just ignore such insufferable so and sos. You can’t win them all!

  11. Absolutely not! Especially since the option is given at sign up to receive or not receive updates. Ignore him.

  12. Jackie: I did that before too, I ended up closing the forum and all the same people demanded I put it back up! I just sent a faked autoresponse saying “sorry your email could not be delivered because you have cancelled all communication to this server”
    hah!

Dennis: there’s always a few ‘takers’ who think you owe them for using your software. it’d be funny if it wasn’t true!

Nicole: I do try to ignore them, luckily commentluv users are a decent bunch (mostly!)

    d.e.s: have done!

  13. I don’t think asking for some feedback is too much to ask for especially considering how great of a script you have put together.

There are the people who are not aware of the importance of such emails. They can be simply ignored Andy!

  18. I agree with everyone here. I think the obvious is that it only happend with one person out of 1200 subscribers so the other 1199 subscribers were happy to hear from you. I like those percentages myself and there is always one loser in a crowd of 1200. I just hope that person reads all these comments about them so we can ruin his day for you since he did the same to you.

  19. Unfortunately, there’s always going to be someone who is unhappy with something. That’s just life. I’ve always believed that when people are given something for free, they don’t value it. If you charge $1.00, the perceived value goes up tremendously. I don’t know why. I guess it’s just human nature. Don’t dispair. You’re doing great things!

  22. Hi Andy

I wouldn’t worry about it, you will always get someone who complains no matter what you do.

  23. I find it peculiar that you even care? People who do that do it in the moment just to vent. They aren’t thinking about it even one second after they do it yet you end up bothered by it all week.

Let it go. There has to be more important things to care about than the 1 person who can’t appreciate what 1199 others can.

    Best wishes,
    Sam

I’d rather get one email than risk not being told of something really important, If I don’t want to read it, my mail system is now so advanced that I can remove it with one click. Or I could write an email complaining to you and have to use several clicks and some typing. The lazy man’s option will always win out!

    Thanks for a great plugin.

Sire: Quite a few people have said the same thing, it’s nice to know!

Ray: LOL! someone sent me an email demanding that I change the style for commentluv so it doesn’t put a box around the comment, I pointed him to the styling settings and he couldn’t work it out and wrote back saying I should change it for him!

    Dennis: He does indeed!

  32. I really don’t get why people get so upset about getting emails. It’s words on a screen.

Sure, they can be annoying. But I’d rather have 1000 emails than one annoying phonecall, or a visit from the Jehovas Witnesses (no offence to any JW’s out there). I can get rid of those 1000 emails with a few mouse clicks. The other two things are way more intrusive.
