FiddyP Updates coming your way…

updating

I’ve made an update to the CommentLuv plugin so it behaves better, the speed should be better too after rearranging the different parsing routines and I’ve added a bit of code submitted by Edward De Leau of http://edward.de.leau.net/ to handle web-log.nl blogs. Thanks Edward!

The second part of the AJAX series is coming soon, I’ve been literally worked off my feet this week so I’ll have to squeeze some typing in during the evenings this week to get it finished.

I’ve added some adsense code here and there to see if it has any potential, I’ll see how they perform before deciding if I want to keep them. Lots of impressions so far but no clicks and I’ve also added a couple Tradedoubler ads. One at the top for PC World and one to the right on the main page for special offers. A few clicks but no sales yet but it’s still very early to decided if they will be worth it or not.

I’m also trialling the Google search box instead of the WordPress one, it can search the web and this site and display the results within the FiddyP template which is pretty cool. I’ll test it for a few weeks to see how that goes too.

AntiBarbie has prepared a holiday themed short story for here and it’s great! Look out for it on the 1st of December, she’s a dark writer that one. You’ll see why when you read it.

  3. Came here through your comment on my blog. Very nice site you have and I am specially delighted to see an example for a simple wordpress plugin which was just what I wanted to do! You got another subscriber! Keep up with the good work!

  4. @opal: I’ll be posting regular updates on the progress of any monetization, I’m happy to hear any tips you might have!
@claire: It would be so great to have a blogger version of CommentLuv but they don’t let you fiddle with the comments template :-(
@vladimir: I got to your blog through a comment you made on someones site, clicked your last blog post link! Let me know what plugin you create, I’d be happy to give you a link when it’s done.

  5. “trialling”? Is that a word? (#)\:1 Anyway, I don’t remember the last time I lurked around here, but things are really looking great. Especially your header/sidebar broken look. Very polished and clean.

And good luck with all the things you’re doing with the site, I’m sure they’ll all pay off. I’m actually going to do the Google search box on my site soon, but I think I’m going to give users the option of using the WordPress API or the Google one. Look forward to hearing how it goes. (#):)

  6. Bush: thanks for your comments, I think using the WP API and the google site search is pretty similar when you display the results in your own site. Plus there’s the chance you could earn a bit on the sponsored ads of a normal search.

  7. I would be interested to know how you do with the google/site search. I put that one on my site, and a referral ad. Didn’t think I had enough traffic to warrant the adsense.
It would be nice to be able to have my extra bandwidth needs paid for.

  8. Commentluv is awesome; I’m anxious to see how it might be improved…?

  9. Obvious way to improve would be to refresh the feed every time comment is displayed, but that would probably make it slow.

  10. I tried again to make it work and this is what I get when a comment is posted. Any idea why is it happening?

WordPress database error: [Lost connection to MySQL server during query]

  11. Witchypoo: I’ll be posting the details of earnings on this blog as and when they happen (just no money made yet!)
Forrest: think along the lines of blogrush and cliq….
Netvestor: that would make the last blog post the same for every comment someone has made, maybe changing the words to “at this time I last wrote about…” before the last blog post is shown
Vladimir: I have never seen that error happen before, what other comment plugins do you have?

  12. I have math comment spam and subscribe to comments.

When you post a comment with CL it waits about 30 seocnds and then display that message.

  13. have you tried it with [ debugon] (no space after first bracket) ?

  14. Just tried it, same problem and no debug output shown.

  15. Ok debug info appeared eventually as the comment appeared

[debugon] (blogspot) (try alternate) (try blogspot location) (try typepad) (try parsing) (failed)

I entered a blogspot blog. It seems that my server has problems connecting there? (remove slash) (wp_norm)

  19. I wondered where that 50p came from !
TBH I don’t see much future in them in the current state, it’s something I can play with over the next few months…

  20. Another question: I’m a noob at WP,so want to know if I have to uninstall the present incarnation to get the new and shinier one. Or does it come as an add-on?

  24. Andy, I am going to update my CommentLuv shortly…. The current version is still behaving beautifully, except of course, it keeps on missing Lalla Mira’s feed most of the time.

She’ll be so happy once she starts parsing :)

I see the ads…. Know you will do fantabulous. As always.

  25. Dave » yes mate, I can’t wait! That reminds me, I have to contact Robby. I haven’t spoken to him for ages!
Sharon » thanks Sharon! The ads are something I am going to fiddle with, a US/UK detector and the who sees ads plugin so commenters don’t see them. I think I’ll only put them on the high SE traffic posts.

  26. So then I am waiting for excited for the AJAX series next part.
