Right on the back of the final version 2.1 I have decided to release 2.15 which addresses some things that people have been emailing me about since they upgraded. If you’re not good at upgrading plugins, don’t worry! if your commentluv works for you then you don’t need to update if you don’t want to.
The updates…
- You can choose no image to be displayed below the comment form
- You can use text instead of an image to be displayed below the comment form
- A reset to default settings box in case you mess up the values and can’t remember what they were!
- Updated jQuery code to make it more compatible with other javascripts running on the page
Watch out in your dashboard for the update notice! Or use this link to get the latest 2.1.5 version
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/commentluv/
thanks to Jacob from http://justcreativedesign.com/ for the feedback and Joe from http://imwithjoe.com for creating a mystery suitable for the Scooby Doo gang and the others who are deep in my history page and cannot be found (I must have browsed through hundreds of sites since I saw your feedback so I can’t find your urls to show)
I didn’t really want to update the plugin so soon but since imwithjoe.com and johncow.com have updated there have been a lot of commentluv.com registrations and oodles of downloads so I think I should address this asap. oh, CommentLuv has just gone over 20,000 downloads from the WP Codex ! yey.

Thanks for the work Andy! You da man! Haven’t seen such dedicated work so quick on a lot of plugins, especially based on a couple of issues and one dudes weirdness! Thanks.

lol thanks Joe, it’s the least I can do for a famous comment maker like yourself!
you can use the link to download the latest version if you don’t see the upgrade notice in your dashboard. I’m interested to see if I can let scooby and the gang leave
Hahaha, cool! I’ll download and upgrade it now. It hasn’t shown up in the dash yet.
Normal Joe´s last blog post..What Really Goes On At Blog World Expo
I just commented and it works on your blog.
I can’t believe it was because of two objects sharing the same ID on your theme and I didn’t see that until after I’d coded the fix!
luckily, it’s all good now and the fix will prevent further instances of this happening.
thanks for your feedback Joe!
Man, I don’t like the new update!
Why the hell did you put that image man, it’s not coll, and why have you put, that the people can chose, and why the border on the thing?
Keep it simple has it was…
I’m going to uninstall it, if you made any update that i like, i reinstall it
ORiOn´s last blog post..Tutorial PHP – Parte II
I see that we can change the option, but i should keep it simple man :/
But it’s nice…
ORiOn´s last blog post..Tutorial PHP – Parte II
Thanks for all the hard work dude. Hey, why don’t you have the border thingy on yours! lol
Yours is all sleek and sexy!

You should consider KeywordLuv too. I love CommentLuv, wish they would make something similar for Joomla. I have one site in WordPress v2.6 and my next site will also be in WordPress. There’s just so much support and plugins that make it really sweet.
google chrome (chi)´s last blog post..Incognito Flash Cookie Vulnerability
Orion: um thanks I think. if you want it more simple, choose the option to show no badge at all. Can’t be simpler!
normal joe: The border will be put in because it is an image that is linked, you can either remove the image or change it to text or if you’re talking about the last post style, this would work good on your blog (put in the style settings box in the settings page)
background-color:#f2f2f2; border: 2px solid #e2e2e2; display:block; font-weight: normal; padding: 5px;
Chi: I will see if I can get one out there for joomla too, it shouldn’t be too hard, I’ve got it installed on my test machine so when I get some time I’ll try and get it working on joomla.
I was considering something like keyword luv to put into CommentLuv so a blog owner can choose to have that enabled too so there aren’t too many check boxes under the comment form… maybe for the next update
Andy,
This is great! Thanks for your fantastic support with the plug-in. You’ve done a damn fine job on it.
Ian´s last blog post..Microsoft Commercials Are Better Than You Think
Hi Andy!
Nice work, the AJAX thingy… there is only one problem: the more you mis- and retype the URL, the more lines will show up in the drop-down selection. Right now (I mis- and retyped my URL on purpose) it shows “(last post)…. Register your site….” twice instead of just once.
Marco Luthe´s last blog post..R.E.M. Tour 2008 – Short Reviews Of Berlin & Hamburg
Ian: thanks mate!
Marco: It is supposed to do that so people can change the site in the url box and choose a post from that and then change their site back to another one so it shows a link to their site in the comment and a link to another site under the comment.
it’ll only look again if the url is changed which is what it’s supposed to do.
thanks for your comment
good job! To be honest I don’t think I will update the plugin as everything works fine for me so far, but it’s great to see a plugin developer trying to make his plugin more useful for the community.
frogstr´s last blog post..Google killed it!
frogstr: be aware that I will be gradually phasing out the remote script for the old commentluv versions because they are killing my server!! this new one is much nicer to my rack.

I’m getting ready to launch another site based on WP and I KNOW commentluv can bring some serious traffic but…how much time do you spend cleaning up the SPAM?
James´s last blog post..Clothing Discounts at CX London
Dennis: I never realized before but you are using wordpress 2.3.3 . this plugin needs at least 2.5 and probably be better with 2.6 and up
also, have you installed something new to your site for acceleration? if you have, it’s messing with commentluv and breaking the jquery remote file fetch
James: not long at all. same as normal but I always got a lot of comments and spam anyway.
nice one! Always loved this plugin. =)
One problem thou. When i did an automatic upgrade it didnt upgrade the version number. So it still says i need to upgrade.
gobba´s last blog post..Bluesmobile
D’OH! I do remember now reading something about that on one of the past posts…..is it in the read me file?
Dang it, I so love 2.3.3 and dislike the upgrade stories I hear in abundance, oh well I may have to! LOL
Acceleration? I have no idea what those would be, so I’d have to say no
How long ’till the others are “phased out”? I want to try and restore the original again, so I have something in there for now….one regular reader noticed right off the bat (it was uninstall’ed for less then 10 mins)
Dennis Edell´s last blog post..New Feature! Link Love For Your Thoughts
gobba: that’s strange, it’s looking good here and my other blogs and test sites with no admin notification.
Dennis: oh dear, I don’t know what is different between when it was working the other day and now. The header looks different from last time and there is an extra GET communication happening .
I use instant upgrade plugin to do my updates and it has worked every time since 2.2 or thereabouts. but, take your time! do a wp-backup for the database and have a copy of your root folder and sub directories or use a back script if you have one with your hosting.
I am thinking I might have to make a special version or add an option in this one to use the standard way of doing it. I’ll have to add in some antispam though because the old version gets hit for every single comment, even the spambot attacks mean my script tries to find a feed for every one of the thousands that get sent via bots.
hmmm, maybe next week I’ll get on it. I’ve been coding day and night for 3 weeks on this!
do a wp-backup for the database and have a copy of your root folder and sub directories or use a back script if you have one with your hosting.
Huh? What? Was that English?? *cry*
Dennis Edell´s last blog post..New Feature! Link Love For Your Thoughts
I’m still missing the checkbox. In previous versions it was possible for a commenter to opt-out (or opt-in) to commentluv. There was a nice little checkbox besides the commentluv option. I would like to see that one back. If it’s not there, defaulting the “Choose to have CommentLuv on by default?” option to “FALSE” effectively turns off the functionality of the entire plugin.
It’s great to see the text-only option back, it’s cleaner in a lot of blog designs.
dennis: oh dear oh dear. I don’t know what to say mate, surely you know how to download your site with ftp and install a plugin called wp database backup? if not, you may be better off staying away from all plugins that do anything at all!!
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/stats/
for the backup and see if your cpanel has a backup option
Lodewijk: there are two options for someone not to show the post, they can choose the option called “do not show” or they can select the blank line at the top of the pull down box
Andy: I haven’t seen that function yet. Probably because of my feed problems. It’s still quite a mystery to me. All the feed readers I tried seem to find it perfectly, both web-based as client-based readers.
I even resynced my feed at feedburner, and reset my registration at commentluv.com. Both to no avail unfortunately. As far as I can see right now, there’s no problem with my feed. But commentluv shows me there is…
The annoying thing is that it used to work. I changed hosts recently, maybe that’s got something to do with it. Annoying… more investigation tomorrow.
Thanks for your support so far.
LOL the plugin shouldn’t be an issue, but I’ve never backed-up ’til now (I know, bad me). When I upgraded to 2.3.3 I used the 1click upgrade inside fantastico and crossed my fingers.
OK, if you had ONE option, what would be the easiest backup/reinstall method there is?
Dennis Edell´s last blog post..New Feature! Link Love For Your Thoughts
I have a semi-dedicated so I use plesk to do a back up and ftp to another server. it does the whole shebang in one go and can be restored in a click.
in your position you could use the plugin to download the backup of the mysql database and then use an ftp program to download all the files in your htdocs or public_html folder to your hard drive.
if you’re feeling adventurous then you can use a downloadable php script to do the backup for you.
or, try asking your host. if they’re worth paying for, they should be able to do a full backup for you to download or store it on their server and be ready to restore it if you mess up
I’m assuming Hostgator should be fine with this…
Dennis Edell´s last blog post..New Feature! Link Love For Your Thoughts
congratulations on the update.
i don’t yet use commentluv on my blog, but as a fairly regular commenter, just wanted to say thanks for making the commenting experience that much better.
kouji´s last blog post..haiku poem: help end hunger
I’ve found the problem. There’s an option in FeedBurner in the Publicize tab. It’s called NoIndex and it let’s you indicate whether your feed should be indexed by Search Engines and whether it can be used by Yahoo Pipes. The latter is the culprit.
I had that option activated for both search engines and Yahoo Pipes. After deactivating it, everything worked fine (on your test page anyway). After experimenting a bit, it turned out to be the Yahoo Pipes option that made commentluv not find my feed anymore.
Anyway, I turned it off entirely now, and it should work fine now.
Hmm, apparantly it’s still not in the clear entirely. No commentluv on that last comment as well…
Andy, I love the plugin. But the last two updates cause my code to be invalid when CommentLuv is active. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a conflict I should be looking for?
Laurel Plum´s last blog post..Storage – For Ideas Imitate the Professionals
Lodewijk: I think you’re on the right track, that would make sense of why normal feedreaders can access it but scripts cant
Laurel: you may need to explain in more detail by what you mean when you say caused your code to be invalid. The plugin code, html, css?
addendum fro Laurel: I think I know what you mean now, I put a single page through an xhtml validator and it said 42 errors!! turns out I didn’t enclose the inline javascript with the right tags.
I fixed it now and it validates ok so watch out for version 2.1.3
oh dear, I really didn’t want to have 2 updates in 2 days but people duz like their page to be valid!!
Hi Andy!
I took a further look at your plugin.
You should definitely use
wp_enqueue_script(‘jquery’)
instead of pointing to the file directly.
Otherwise, there will be 2 versions of jQuery if you use AjaxEditComments: in the current version, that plugin deregisters jQuery 1.2.6 to use 1.2.3 instead (there seemed to be some trouble with 1.2.6 and prototype).
With wp_enqueue_script, you make sure you only have one version of jQuery running.
Why have you commented that line out in the plugin?
Also, you could offer an option where to put the image/selection. With your plugin, it shows below the submit button, because it is appended to #commentform. I do not find that very useful, as the submit button should be the one that is shown last – after all the options.
I changed the code to append it to the preview button (#preview) on my blog http://www.saphod.net . Take a look there at a post of your choice. It should work fine.
You could add an option that says “Append to (ID of DIV)”.
Keep up the nice work.
Happy 2 days off!
marco: 2 very good points and suggestions! I used enqueue at first but took it out for some reason while I was doing some testing. I’ll get that fixed for the next update and add the option to place the badge and last post wherever someone wants. I put it .after the form because the old version had it in the same place (well, just before the </form tag) but I see how it can go places that are too far down with some other plugins activated
thanks for the useful feedback

Andy,
I have just emailed you about CommnetLuv inserting an extra //–> into the blog – I had to deleted it in the *.php file to get rid of it on my blog.
Alex
Alex Sysoef´s last blog post..Comment Spam Filter Comes To Rescue Akismet
so sorry Alex, I saw it too and fixed it now. please update your version of commentluv to 2.1.4 to fix this and also add an option to place the badge where you want
Andy,
nice to see how fast you work… seems like you had no chance for your 2 days off so far, huh?
More suggestions:
1. The jQuery “.after” only adds a “span” which does not provoque a linebreak. I had to add two “br”s myself before the span so that it does not show up next to the preview button, but below. Maybe you can add a “Add this HTML before image/lasposts” or “Add … linebreaks before…”
2. The text for “Do Not Show” and “Click to choose a different post” should be editable, too. –> Options?
3. I have just registered my blog with commentluv. Unfortunately, my last 10 posts only show up if I type the “www.” before my domain in the URI field. Maybe you should change the script so that it works with “www.” as well as without – i.e. using “saphod.net” and “www.saphod.net” should end up in the same result.
4. Please – reminding you of my first questions – add an option where I can switch off that everytime I change the URL, select options will be added instead of replaced. I would rather like that only the possible posts from one blog are shown – meaning that the selection options will change completely as soon as the URI changes.
That’s it so far.
Later!
PS:
It’s not my “last post” that follows… I should change that text in my options, too.
Marco Luthe´s last blog post..Compressing Files To Speed Up Your Site
Ok…
1. done: added a prepend html option
2. done: user can now change a different string for Choose a different post to show
3. done: good idea!
4. done. new url causes list to be replaced with new list
ps. a user can always change to “[name] recently posted [lastpost]” if they like
I’ll email you the updated version and you can check it works as expected if you like
Yip, maiing the new plugin would be nice, thanks.
I found out that people could always use AjaxEditComments to change what commentluv added… but so what: they could have written it down in the first place, right?
Thanks for making the changes so quickly.
your changes got put into the release I just made which had issues with wp_enqueue_script
it turns out you need to use that command before wp_head or it wont get included!
fixed validation errors
fixed jquery include
flagellated myself with birch tree branches and said hail barry thrice
Cool. Now I have another 10 articles to write before I go live. Consider comment_luv added
James´s last blog post..Robert Dyas Deals
Very nice, Andy – just the way I needed it. Thanks!
Now, I do not have to change your plugin code any longer – well, I did have to a tiny little bit, actually, because I wanted to have “Do not add a link to your comment” instead of “Do not show” (maybe worth another option in the next update?).
The only thing that I still do not like is that “Register…” – or whatever text that can be selected – is shown after “… last blog post..” if you do not select a post. Can one e.g. make some selection options un-choosable (grey out )? It would also be cool that when you choose “Do not show”, the “… last blog post…” would be replaced by “You chose not to add a link” (configurable)…
But those are just some ideas that need no hurry. I might be back here if I find anything interesting that could be added.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much, I updated as soon as I saw it!
Good stuff. I am looking at experimenting with CommentLuv on my blog. Links are what makes the web go round.
