Ben: the prizes community thing might be very popular, I like that it can benefit all blogs using the plugin. once I get all the fandangles sorted in the back office I’ll get some more news up about it

POTPOLITICS: thanks very much for your kind words and actions, its this kind of thing that keeps me making new plugins and spending so much time making sure everyone gets it working!

Ute: that’s because you’re using feedburner redirects, if you link points to feedburner, the plugin doesn’t know where your real site is. Go to feedburner and turn off redirects so it uses your proper url that points directly to your post

    Hi Andy!

    Nice work with 2.5.3.

I don’t like to say this, but… there seems to be a little jQuery problem. It does not seem to affect the plugin working, but everytime after filling in a website and switching to the comment textarea, I get a “g is undefined (jquery.js?ver=1.2.6 – line 11)” in the Firebug console. Also, every link is – again – displayed twice in the selection box (I also described this in former versions and it was gone until now).

Funny… I also updated WP Ajax Edit Comments to 2.2.1.0 and it stopped working.

    What’s going on with jQuery 1.2.6? :-)

byteful: it seems to work better than a black outline for sure!

marco: I think someone has reported that the latest version of ajax edit comments causes commentluv to stop working. I think it is do with ajax edit comments including it’s own version of jquery. I don’t know why it would do that instead of using the wp_enqueue command. I’ll see if I can contact him or find a workaround

  15. Marco Luthe
    06.10.08 11:17 am

    @Andy:
Yip, someone told you that – I think it was actually me. :-)

WP Ajax Edit Comments has been updated to include the latest jQuery 1.2.6, but it is not working on my blog. I deactivated it until the issue is solved.

Commenluv works fine except that JS error that is shown in the console – so don’t get confused: this error has nothing to do with WP Ajax Edit Comments.

Do you use Firebug for Firefox?
That’ll show the error in the console.

  16. Andy Bailey
    06.10.08 11:43 am

Marco: lol, I couldn’t remember who told me. I am getting tons of emails lately about commentluv so it’s hard to keep track. I just try and solve one problem or issue at a time!

I see ajax edit comments includes the jquery library from it’s own folder which kind of messes up any other jquery scripts that rely on the wp include

the g error can happen sometimes if the commentbox gets focused twice in quick sucession. this can happen because the first focus causes the ajax to fire which (for a teeny weeny time) defocuses the commentext area and trys to unbind the event but if you click for a long time (>25ms) it fires the event before the unbind can occur which makes two calls and one of them comes back in time to cause a g error

    (or so I assume!)

firebug is the reason I use firefox and not chrome! I just wish firefox would not ask to update plugins or restore a session before opening the browser. and it would be nice if it asked if you wanted to save a password after you successfully log in. but that’s a whole other post!

  17. Marco Luthe
    06.10.08 1:06 pm

    LOL

I had a look at the new WP Ajax Edit Comments: it uses wp_enqueue_script(‘jquery’). Yes, there is a jquery.js in the js-folder, but I think that one isn’t being used – at least, I couldn’t find a reference to that file.

The g error does occur “sometimes”, but all the time. It is kind of interesting: I put my URI in, press tab… and there is the error (even here on your site). Also, the double appearance of the feed posts is still an issue for me. It didn’t show up twice in the prior versions. What have you changed in this current version 2.5.3, and could you please adjust it back to as it was: no g error, no double feed posts? That’d be great!

If I could only help… but unfortunately, I am a real beginner with jQuery.

    Thanks for your ambition.

    PS:
Does it come as a surprise when I say that the tooltip thingy is not working here (at this very moment)? :-)

    06.10.08 1:16 pm

marco: I didn’t get the error on your site or here that you’re talking about, it happens maybe 1 out of 50 times for me. there isn’t any difference from the last version to this for the event listener so it can’t be that.

I noticed on some blogs wpajaxeditcomments uses it’s own jquery include, I think it depends on which thing enqueues first.

I’ve contacted the author so hopefully we can work out why his is stopping mine from running

the heart info box is ok but my server has changed IP’s so it may play up for a few hours until all is settled in with the DNS and stuff

the syntax error is occuring because of wp-post-count , I guess I’ll have to disable that plugin

    #20

  21. Marco Luthe
    06.10.08 1:29 pm

OK, I just can’t understand why you say it just happens 1 out of 50 times… I can see it in my Firebug console EVERY time!

I will send you a screenshot.

    Please do this:

    1. Open the Firebug console (which should be activated).
    2. Type in a URI.
    3. Use the >>TAB button<< to skip to the text area.
    4. DO YOU SEE A “g is undefined” NOW???

    If not, I am speechless…

The error does not occur if you use the mouse to change to the text area!

    #21

  22. Andy Bailey
    06.10.08 2:07 pm

probably because I use the mouse to focus on the comment text area 49 times out of 50

I tried using the tab to leave the url box on this post
    http://www.imnotbeautifullikeyou.com/someday-i-suppose/

and I didn’t get the g is undefined error

also on this url with no error when I tab out of the url field
    http://sarcasticmom.com/im-normally-gassy-but-now-johns-at-defcon-1/

    and here
    http://aeropama.com/diari-malam-raya-2008-looser/

and even here on this comment when I tab to the comment text area there is no error for me

the only consistent thing in the case of your errors happening is your browser. maybe you have an addon or other script thing that is causing it…

It’s a drag: I get the error on each of those sites… :’-(

Thanks for trying to find out.

    Keep up the good work!

    Hi Andy,

in /js/commentluv.js (plugin version 2.5.3), I commented out line 39 where you bind the focus handler to the text area:

    // jQuery(cl_settings[3]).bind(‘focus’,cl_dostuff(cl_settings));

Now, everything seems to work fine without the “g is undefined” error!

I guess the problem is that you already assigned the .focus handler in line 26, so that there is a double request that somehow leads to this error (and shows the links twice).

    Have a try.

  25. Andy Bailey
    08.10.08 11:18 am

    thanks for that marco.

problem is if I take out that line and the user changes their URL it wont fire the fetch routine again.

this is because I unbind the focus event after it has fired to prevent it firing every time the comment text area is clicked.

the error doesn’t cause any invalid xhtml or freeze the program and the functionality is better with it than without. I think the majority of people who don’t have firebug installed will notice it at all.

it must be the geek in you that can’t stand to see the little red X mark down in the systray of firefox! :-)

  26. Marco Luthe

    Andy,

I am so sorry… I actually forgot to mention that I filled in another command! Changes have to be made as follows:

    line 39 (commented out):
    // jQuery(cl_settings[3]).bind(‘focus’,cl_dostuff(cl_settings));

    (new) line 40 (inserted):
    cl_dostuff(cl_settings);

Without the line 40, it will – of course – not fire the request when the URI is changed.

I left the unbind, because somehow it prevents the links from being shown twice…

That way, I haven’t found any unnecessary AJAX requests.

The only thing I still wanna change geek-style is that when you type in a URI and then change via TAB the FIRST time, posts are shown twice, because I think” .change” as well as “.focus” is fired…

And… if you have registered with “www.” and you just type in your domain without that, it will not show the last 10 but only the last post.

    Yeah, I admit:
    I am a geek…
I HATE THOSE RED FIREBUG X’s! :-) LOL

  27. Andy Bailey
    08.10.08 1:12 pm

how about changing the if statement for the url change to add another check (line 38)

    if(jQuery(‘#luv’).is(“:checked”) && jQuery(‘#cl_post’).val()!=”")

that way, it only fires for a url change if there has been something returned from the fetch previously.

    I kept line 40 as
    cl_dostuff(cl_settings);

    and removed the bind function.

as for the www / no www thing. Wordpress redirects to a non-www if it is set in the settings as the blog URL so it’s common sense to use only the url that you have defined there for registering at commentluv and for making comments.

if I put in a check for www too in the remote script, it could mean having to search through the database twice which slows it down for everyone. shame to do that because someone can’t decide on www or not!

thanks for your feedback, I’ll put the changes in the new update (you get in the credits too!)
this will prevent it from showing two lots of posts in the select box

    geeks unite!

ok you did that correctly but now there is something else causing the jquery include to halt. I think it is your ajax comments plugin. you could try disabling that and seeing if commentluv works, if it does then it isn’t compatible with ajax comments on your blog

it may be your theme as other blogs I have seen that are using ajax comments work fine with commentluv.

My second question is about the heart. I re-active it at “TRUE” but when I put the mousse on it, nothing appears, I have to click on it to do so and it came in the same page…Why?
My third question : I registered on commentluv and get an ID that I put in my setting but when I go to my heart’s comment he told me that I am not a member…do I have to wait or there is a problem?

I think if you search on wordpress.org in the plugin section that you will find another ajax comments plugin.
I tried it out at your site and was able to get the heart box working. maybe it’s your browser?
you are not getting your site shown as member because you are using feedburner redirect links, if you hover over your link you can see it points to feedburner and not your site so it cant tell who made the comment

look here for how to turn off feedburner redirects without affecting your feed

if you use feedburner and commentluv doesn’t bring back the right post then it will always be feedburners fault.
there are hundreds of forum messages I have seen trying to find out why feedburner doesn’t send back the right post to scripts remotely but it’s fine for feedreaders.

feedburner don’t answer our questions on their own forums.

it’s a useful service but not without it’s faults and it’s quite a pain to my eyeball when people assume its commentluvs fault if their feedburner feed doesn’t send back the latest results. it makes me mad!!

if a script doesn’t use caching in it’s request to your feed then feedburner can sometimes send back a cached version which is sometimes days old!

if your feed is being read direct from your blog then it will always retreive the latest post.

    thanks for your feedback Marco!
